Diesel owners face dilemma over pricey emissions fluid
The shortage of DEF, an essential part of diesel (diesel) vehicles, is intensifying. When China restricted urea exports, the domestic urea water market, which accounts for 97% of imports of raw materials from China, took a direct hit. The government has come up with various measures, such as securing elements from countries other than China and converting industrial elements into automotive elements, but all of them are only temporary measures. In the wake of the urea water crisis, there is advice that it is necessary to investigate all the resources highly dependent on a specific country and come up with countermeasures.
According to the industry on the 4th, Lotte Fine Chemical, which occupies 50% of the domestic urea water market, decided to receive urea from Russia from January next year. However, it is only 10% of the amount that had to come from China in the past, so Lotte Fine Chemical is looking for additional suppliers. A Lotte Fine Chemical official said, “Europe, which uses Russian urea, is also suffering from a urea crisis these days, so it is difficult to secure sufficient quantities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it is requesting China to conduct pre-export inspection procedures earlier through various diplomatic channels in response to the recent shortage of urea water from China.
“Through various diplomatic channels between Korea and China, we continue to raise our side’s wishes, such as the early progress of pre-export inspections, to each relevant sector in China, continuously, specifically, and densely,” said Choi Young-sam, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at a regular briefing today.
He also added that diplomatic missions in China, such as the Korean Embassy in China, are providing local support for smooth inspection procedures and prompt import of weak machines.
