Hyundai Motor Group’s factories in China and Russia suffered a major blow. Retaliation for THAAD and Aftermath of the Ukrainian War

Entering the 2000s, the world’s hot topic was entering emerging markets following the US and Europe. The “BRICs” (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) first mentioned by Goldman Sachs, an American investment bank, in 2001 have attracted the most attention among them.

Hyundai Motor Group also quickly invested in these countries. It built factories in India in 1998, China in 2002, Russia in 2011, and Brazil in 2012, making it a key base for globalization. In these countries, where 10 to 20 years have passed since entering the country, the status of Hyundai Motor Group is different.

In 2016, Hyundai Motor Group sold 1.83 million units on a wholesale basis in China, including Hyundai Motor and Kia. Hyundai Motor Company increased its local factories to five, and Kia also operated three production factories. The combined share of the Chinese passenger car market rose to 8.1%. However, as anti-Korean sentiment was expressed in China following the deployment of THAAD in 2017, sales in China plummeted. Last year, the Hyundai Motor Group’s market share in China fell to the 1% range (1.9%), and in the meantime, Hyundai Motors and Kia’s factories also decreased by one each.

“Scratches on the car are okay” Hyundai Motor Company unveils dream car nano technology

Hyundai Motor and Kia introduced new nanomaterial technology to be applied to future ‘dream cars’. 1 nm (nanometer · 1 billionth of a meter) is a small unit of 1/100,000 of the thickness of a human hair. By synthesizing materials in nanometer (nm) units and changing their arrangement, materials with new properties are born.

The reason why Hyundai and Kia are focusing on nanotechnology is that basic material technology is the starting point of all mobility technologies. Hyundai Motor Company and Kia started material research in the 1970s, and in the late 1990s, they established an organization focused on researching advanced materials and carried out large-scale investments and projects.
